Lake Couchiching originates from the Ojibwe word, "goojijiing" which means "inlet" and is connected to world famous Lake Simcoe by a narrow channel. The lake is about 16 kilometers long and less than 5 kilowmeters wide. The lake is part of the Trent Severn Waterway which connects the St. Lawrence River to Georgian Bay. Some consider it to be the gateway to Ontario's northland. Orillia was founded in 1867 and incorporated as a town in 1875, and a city in 1969. Singer songwriter Gordon Lightfoot and Sir Sam Steele of the North West Mounted Police originated from Orillia. Orillia was the "first" for municipal hydro electric transmission plant in North America, in 1936, printed its own money and it was the municipality to introduce daylight saving time.
